Jesus began the Sermon on the Mount by revealing eight aspects of the Christian's character. Jesus' second topic exposes the Christian's influence on the lost world. Christians are to function as salt to prevent the spread of decay within society and they are to function as light by spreading the truth concerning God and the ways of righteousness. This sermon analyzes both of these concepts taught by Jesus.

A saved person is a merciful person, he works to maintain a pure heart, he is a peacemaker instead of a troublemaker and he is willing to gladly accept persecution due to his faith in Jesus.
